The past year sure didn't seem like it was dominated by Google and Apple news. We followed hundreds of stories in 2011, and the vast majority of them had neither Google nor Apple in their headlines.

But now, as we survey the stories that captured Gadget Lab's attention the most, it's clear the highest-impact events swirled around the two California mega-companies in Mountain View and Cupertino.

Apple Patent Describes New Type of Face-Recognition Tech

Apple Patent Describes New Type of Face-Recognition Tech

Future iOS devices could be unlocked by your face, and not fooled by still photos. Image: Patently Apple. Swipe to unlock could be a thing of the past for next-gen iOS devices. Like current Galaxy Nexus users, iOS users could soon be using facial recognition technology to lock or unlock their iDevices.

As described in a recently discovered patent, Apple's method would sense when a user is approaching the device — for example, if it's seated in a dock, and the user walks toward it. The device would then use its image processor to execute facial recognition to unlock the device, all with low battery penalties.

Man steals Greyhound bus to meet friend for Christmas

Because there's no way to top this lede, we'll just have to quote the whole thing, from lohud.com:. PEEKSKILL - A 39-year-old city man faces felony charges upstate after apparently not heeding Greyhound's slogan of "Leave the driving to us.". But never fear, Andrew Hickey of New York had a commercial driver's license, and apparently he knew what he was doing. After swiping the running bus from a transport center at 4:30am, he managed to drive it about 60 miles before Greyhound officials remotely disabled the bus, using a system that apparently all of the company's buses are equipped with.

Remember the Nokia N9 - the first and last MeeGo phone from Nokia. While the phone was brilliant in its own right, it won't be officially making its way over to our shores but that doesn't mean we can't experience the goodness that MeeGo brings. Renowned iPhone hacker chpwn has released a new tweak for jailbroken iPhone devices that brings the multi-tasking aspect of MeeGo over to iOS. If you like swiping your apps left and right, and launching the multi-tasking tray by swiping upwards on your phone, this tweak is for you. No, it's not going to replace your iPhone with the MeeGo OS, but you get one cool feature from it.

Prada 3.0 Smartphone Is As Impressive As It Is Fashionable

Liked the Prada II smartphone released in 2008. The iconic fashion house has once again teamed up with LG and released the Prada 3.0 handset. While it has been said that fashion-branded smartphones are not exactly at par with the likes of iPhone, this newest Prada phone is not being outclassed. Looking quite similar to Nokia Lumia 800, the new Android-powered Prada smartphone comes with a 4.3-inch WVGA NOVA screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera.

MacBook Air clone looks pretty much like the real thing

As far as MacBook Air clones/imitations go, this one is pretty darn good, not only in terms of looks but in terms of its hardware specs as well. While companies like Apple are undoubtedly fuming at Chinese companies for infringing on their designs, as techies and consumers we can appreciate how these companies manage to squeeze some pretty impressive specs into such a similar looking device at only a fraction of its cost. This particular MacBook Air clone features a 13.3" display with a resolution of 1368×768. It will also feature a 1.8GHz Intel Atom dual-core processor with 2GB of RAM and even a 64GB SSD.

Spotted over at Expansys USA was a quick sale going on for the unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus. The lowest we’ve seen this model going for from online retailers in the US was $700 (though that one is back up to $720) so it’s still one of the best deals you can find until respective carriers begin offering the device. 3-5 day delivery is free and, unfortunately, this is only the 16GB configuration with no options to expand memory. Researcher finds vulnerability in WPS protocol, looks for manufacturers to offer fix

On the plus side, your router's mostly secure. Security researcher Stefan Viehbock has just discovered a major security hole which allowed him to use a brute force technique to access a WPS PIN-protected network in about two hours. According to Viehbock, a design flaw allows the WPS protocol's 8-digit PIN security to fall dramatically as additional attempts are made. With each attempt, the router will send a message stating whether the first four digits are correct while the last digit of the key is used as a checksum and then given out by the router in negotiation.

Google Sued Over Safe Shopping Feature

Google is being sued by Buysafe, a secure online transaction provider, which claims that Google maliciously extracted its business information and is now rolling out a technology based on that information. According to Buysafe, Google's Trusted Stores program is modeled after Buysafe and has been built using the information of a executive previously employed by a Buysafe partner, which held “extensive” discussions with Buysafe and obtained substantial business information as a result. Buysafe's claims are covered by a patent the company filed in 2003 and received in early 2010.

HTC updates bootloader unlock utility to support latest Android lineup

It wasn't long ago that HTC's bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company's silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid.

It's not a flying fish, it's a submarine-launched UAV

VTOL may be old news already, but here's another great USP for any UAV: the ability to launch from a submerged submarine. The technology is still in development, but the Navy wants to try it from periscope depth during exercises in the Pacific Ocean next year. If all goes to plan, a Switchblade folding-wing drone will be ejected from the submarine's trash disposal unit and then carried to the surface by an SLV ('submerged launch vehicle'), which will keep it dry, point it into the wind and then hurl it heavenwards so it can go a-snooping.

Leaked roadmap says WP Tango coming in Q2 2012, Apollo in Q4

A leaked roadmap offers new info on the release schedule for Windows Phone updates, which doesnÂ't quite line up with the info we heard about a week ago. Plus, it's a leaked schedule, so take it with a pinch of salt. The roadmap has the Tango update arriving in Q2 of 2012. The earlier info had Tango launching at CES (which is in January 2012), but maybe it will be unveiled at CES and the official rollout will begin in the April-June time period.

The tile under Tango says "Product with best prices", which is in line with what we've heard of the codenamed update, namely that it will enable cheaper WP7 phones.

However the DM92 series will measure 27-inches, support 3D content, and incorporate an IPS panel which “enables greater depth, consistent color and brightness at wider viewing angles compared with conventional 3D displays.”.

Ewen the Cheerlight robot reacts to tweets about colors

A robot creator has managed to create a special robot named Ewen, that reacts to tweets about colors. Whenever a tweet is sent to the @cheerlights account, the robot reads it, and depending on the color on the tweet - it gives a different facial expression. The robot is designed to look like a Jawa from Star Wars (though its creator calls Ewen an Ewok), but it functions as intended. Red makes him angry, yellow happy, blue sad, and purple confused. He doesn't react to other colors at the moment, but we're pretty sure it can be upgraded in the future.

We're not sure how many of our readers out there might remember the game Myst, but I certainly do remembering running in on my AST computer that was clocked at a meager 133MHz back in the day. The good news for those who do remember the game is that you will be able to relive the game once more in literal 3D as Hoplite Research will be bringing the adventure game over onto the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. For those who are unfamiliar with the game, the game was originally released back in September of 1993, a good 18 years ago and is basically a first-person adventure game.

In the Future, Gadgets May Heal On Their Own

Gadgets have become essential to mankind, but they are like glass: a little crack could damage the whole device, making it virtually useless. But that may about to change. A team of engineers on University of Illinois has developed an electronic circuit system that heals itself really, really quick in case of a crack. The research, published in the journal Advanced Materials, features a system for self-healing polymer materials that can be rendered useful for conductive systems.

New pump technology prevents gas theft, lets you pay after pumping

Depending on where you live and what gas stations you frequent, finding a pump that will let you pay after filling up is getting tougher and tougher. In an effort to curb absconders who drive off without paying, gas station owners have been forced to ratchet up security measures, leading most to go prepay only, whether that's inside the store or by swiping one's card at the pump. But prepaying can be an inconvenience - particularly if you're settling up with cash - resulting in multiple trips to the storefront to plunk down dollars, then to return for the change and receipt.
