TSF Shell Now Available For Android – Bold New Launcher Will Make You And Your Wallet Cry at $17

The wait is finally over. After counting down the minutes since last night's blog post on from the developers site, TSF Shell is now officially available for (most ) Android devices. I have to say, I didn't believe it would release on schedule, or at all for that matter, but here we are on launch day and — good gawd, the app is $17. Okay, I'll suck it up and pay. For science.

After giving TSF a whirl on my Samsung Galaxy Note (video coming soon), I'm surprised to say, it performs exactly like it did in the preview trailer.

SanDisk Extreme SSD has 'mighty' mix of performance and support

SanDisk's new Extreme SSD sounded nice enough when it launched recently, but we weren't expecting anything too crazy - just another 6Gbps SandForce-based drive that would compete on $-per-GB more than performance. As it turns out, that doesn't do it justice. StorageReview has shown that the unit actually beats the Intel 520 in some key real-world tests and delivers a "chart-topping" 4K random write speed of 88,324 IOPS. With the bonus of the low price-point - starting at $190 for 120GB - and the level of support from SanDisk, the Extreme SSD can now boast an Editor's Choice trophy.

In news that should come as little surprise to anyone who's followed the decline of the ill-fated brand, HP is reportedly laying off 275 webOS employees as it transitions the division from producing hardware to open source software. The cuts have apparently been in the works since the company announced the move to open source back in December, and follow on the heels of former Palm chief, Jon Rubinstein's departure last month.

NEC Medias series makes the trip to MWC, we go eyes-on

While NEC had already unveiled some of its plans for 2012, a phone with a pair of 4.3-inch screens is bound to draw in even the most jaded MWC attendee. Alas, these are still empty prototypes - the seed for whatever set of colors and complicated numerical naming conventions that Japanese carriers will place on the final models. The Medias W closes like a book - or perhaps a certain Sony tablet - and even over-extends beyond the hinge. No glimmer of technical detail on those screens, but we're promised the "latest OS" and from the sticker screen, that appears to be a lightly-skinned version of Ice Cream Sandwich.

To be clear, this is not the HDTV Apple is rumored to be working on, but rather the somewhat popular iOS-powered set-top box. 9to5Mac's source says the new Apple TV will be powered by a faster dual-core processor, perhaps the “Apple A5x” that has been rumored recently, and it will feature better video playback performance as well.

Volkswagen more than doubles profit with 15% sales gain in 2011

Volkswagen is making progress in its quest to be the one automaker to rule them all. According to The Detroit Bureau, Volkswagen saw profits more than double last year as sales increased by 14.7 percent. All told, the company earned $20.5 billion in 2011, up from $9.1 billion the year prior. The profit figure is well ahead of what industry analysts predicted for the German automaker. Total revenue is up by 26 percent as well, which is around two percent more than forecasters calculated.

It's worth noting that a fair chunk of the automaker's earnings were due to the ongoing merger battle between Volkswagen and Porsche.

Have you ever held the result of thousands of tiny lightening bolts in your hand. That’s exactly what you get with the HTC One S. Rather than apply a finish to the phone’s exterior to protect it from scratches and dings, HTC used a process first invented for the production of satellite components to create a uniquely textured casing. It’s called plasma electrolytic oxidation and it superheats the metal unibody case with a blast of plasma energy, physically transforming it into a ceramic.

The 3.5-inch phone offers up a Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core processor and five megapixel camera. According to Sony, the handset should get up to six and a half hours of talk time and will, sadly, be rocking Gingerbread at launch, though for what it's worth, a planned upgrade to ICS has been announced. The Xperia S's younger sibling will be hitting shelves some time in Q2.

We already know that Facebook is not exactly the most careful about your private information. But London's Sunday Times is reporting that Facebook has gone as far as to read user's text messages. Of course, not as a hobby, though.

. A judge in Southern California on Friday awarded $850 to an iPhone user who was throttled on AT&T's network, according to the Associated Press. Judge Russell Nadel of Ventura Superior Court in Simi Valley found in favor of Matt Spaccarelli, who filed a small claims case against AT&T last month. Spaccarelli argued that the carrier unfairly slowed speeds on his iPhone 4′s unlimited data plan and said his phone was being throttled after using a mere 1.5 gigabytes to 2 gigabytes of data per month, even though AT&T's 3GB monthly plan costs the same price of $30 per month.
