Amazon stores 1,700 human genomes in the cloud

Not content with speeding up web browsing and hosting federal data, Amazon Web Services are now helping in the fight against disease. Bezos' crew is donating a chunk of free cloud storage to the 1000 Genomes project, which aims to make it easier for scientists to search for genetic variations linked to diseases. These gene-hunters can also use Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute service to analyze data and discover patterns, although those functions won't come gratis.

TweetDeck taken offline due to bug that opens access to the accounts of others

TweetDeck, a popular Twitter client which was officially acquired by Twitter last year, has been temporarily taken offline due to a bug discovered earlier today. Reported by the folks over at TechCrunch, a reader encountered a strange bug which granted his TweetDeck client access to the accounts of other Twitter and Facebook users. When he logged on to TweetDeck today, he noticed that his account was slower than normal and he could post from many more accounts. Twitter announced that it was looking into the issue, and it has taken TweetDeck offline for the time being.

Honda announces Fit production moving to Mexico

The strength of the Yen is forcing many Japanese automakers to consider building cars for export markets outside their home country. Honda is no different, and has confirmed that it will build the Fit hatchback at its new plant in Mexico starting in the spring of 2014. The plant in Mexico is not the only location where Honda will build the Fit, but it will be used to supply the small hatchback to the large United States, Mexican and Canadian markets.

This is the company that used to make users choose between a device with Wi-Fi and no GPS, or GPS and no Wi-Fi, just to have two products on the market instead of one. RIM keeps losing money as revenues fall further

RIM posted its financial report on the three months period ending on March 3 this year and as you could expect there are few good news inside. The company keeps losing market share and cash and it has even come to the point where it will discontinue providing quantitative guidance for the future. The company shipped 11.1 million phones during the three months and that include the majority of holiday shopping, which represents a 21% sequential decrease. Revenues were down 19% to $4.2 billion and RIM reports a net loss of $125 million.

First, lets get the short list out of the way. If you're not the proud owner of a Transformer Prime, Transformer, Xoom, XYBoard 10.1, Thrive, Iconia or G-Slate then chances are Hulu Plus coming to Honeycomb and ICS slates doesn't do you much good. Here's some great news if your carrier of choice has the color magenta all over it, and you own either an HTC Amaze 4G or an HTC Sensation 4G. Both those phones will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at some point in the future. This information doesn't come via a leak, but it's officially straight from T-Mobile itself.
The carrier has updated its support documents for both the Amaze 4G and the Sensation 4G, and the newly revised documentation clearly mentions ICS updates, as you can see.

Unfortunately though, T-Mobile hasn't publicized any other details about these updates yet.

T-Mobile has confirmed to their customers that two of their HTC phons, the Sensation 4G and Amaze 4G, will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich. I don't think many of us doubted these dual-core phones would eventually get the update, but if you did you can now rest easy. We're willing to bet the farm that these won't come with HTC Sense 4.0, as evidenced by the HTC Vivid's update. Of course, there will always be after-market options for that stuff (even if they aren't all perfect right now).

It's taken considerably longer to roll out than the few weeks that were promised back at CES in January, but Verizon has now confirmed that the Novatel-built, LTE-capable Jetpack MiFi 4620L will be available on April 12th for $49.99. That's on the usual two-year contract, of course, and after a $50 mail-in rebate. In addition to supporting up to ten WiFi connection, it also notably has a removable battery that can be swapped out for a higher capacity 3000mAh unit (double the capacity of the included the one).

Daimler and BYD team up to create Denza brand in China

It's been two years since the union between Mercedes-Benz and BYD, and now the first fruits of that labor are about to be unveiled. The joint venture will sell a line of electric vehicles under the Denza brand name, starting with the E6 built on the platform from the first-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class, a preview of which is shown above in a a Chinese patent filing. Mercedes is said to be handling design and chassis duties, while BYD is developing the lithium-ion phosphate cells and driveline that will occupy the sandwich floor.

Great news for Nokia Lumia 800 owners - if you thought that your phone could do better in the battery department you're in luck. That's what Graphics Properties Holdings is doing, channeling the ghost (and intellectual back-catalogue) of Silicon Graphics. Filing six cases against Apple, Samsung, RIM, HTC, Sony and LG, the lawsuits reference floating point calculations for rendering graphics, something that the company received patent approval for only yesterday. GPH claims that several phones, including the iPhone, Galaxy S II and BlackBerry Torch, infringe on its intellectual property.

Razer Tiamat delayed until late April/May

The Razer Tiamat is starting to look a lot like vaporware with each passing day. Well, for those of you who are concerned about the upcoming gaming headphones from Razer, the company has just posted an update on its official blog. According to the update, they're making the Razer Tiamats as fast as they can, but due to the complexity of the design - it's taking a significantly longer time to manufacture each unit. However, it looks like we have a timeframe to look forward to - Razer is confident that supplies of the headphones should be steady by late April/May though they may have shipments available before then.

It appears Google I/O has already sold out faster than it did the previous year, something we predicted would happen in our reminder post. Droid-Life professes the event sold out in 28 minutes. That time would still have beat the record of 59 minutes set last year. But most people are saying that, unless you ordered tickets the very second the site opened, you weren't going to get any even one minute into the sale.
Our own Rob Jackson attempted to purchase a ticket for one of our developers as soon as registration went live, but was ultimately denied and told that they were all sold out. Reports from many others indicate the same.

The white version of the Motorola RAZR that's selling in the UK was supposed to go on sale either on February 22, or March 1 – depending on who you asked. Suffice to say that neither of those dates turned out to be the real release date for this model. If you want to pick one up, the wait is almost over though. The white Motorola RAZR will be available SIM-free and unlocked from Clove starting on March 29. So in just a few days, you'll be able to play with your very own white RAZR. Of course, to be sure that you'll be among the first to receive it, pre-ordering is a good idea.

LG's quad-core Optimus 4X HD will be launched in India in May. Optimus Vu and 3D Max to follow

LG is reportedly getting ready to launch all of its latest Android smartphones in India, the world's second largest mobile market. Apparently, the first among the new handsets will be the Optimus 4X HD (pictured below), which should arrive in India sometime in May – one month earlier than in the UK. Resembling HTC's One X in many aspects (at least feature-wise), the Optimus 4X HD comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, a 4.7 inch HD display, and an 8MP rear camera.

Xbox 360 Comcast, HBO and MLB.tv apps arrive today on consoles used more for video than games

Microsoft has confirmed via multiple mainstream media outlets that today is the day for several more high-profile video apps to appear on its Xbox 360, namely Comcast Xfinity TV, HBO Go and MLB.tv. There's not a lot of detail on the apps themselves, although the HBO Go and MLB.tv services are familiar due to their availability on other platforms, while we've already heard the Xfinity TV app will mirror the experience and content already seen on the PC. All three naturally include significant Kinect integration, and bring the total number of video apps (already including recent additions like Verizon FiOS and YouTube) available to 36.

Despite it's rocky start, we wouldn't blame you for being a little jealous of Sprint's tight integration with Google Voice. Well, the relationship between the two might not be exclusive for much longer. Vincent Paquet, Product Manager for Google Voice, told CNET in an interview that the web giant is actively talking to other carriers about forming a similar bond. Paquet didn't name any names unfortunately, but we're hoping one of the other major national providers here in the US is on the short list of potential corporate polygamist partners.

Skype for iPad updated to retina display

Skype has released an update to their iPad app that has been tuned to the Retina display. This mainly means that the many icons are now available in high-definition, and that the user-interface (UI) is clean and sharp. Overall, the experience remains very similar to what iPad 2 users have been getting, except for the notable difference in terms of rear-camera quality as the new iPad has a much better camera when compared to the iPad 2. It's really night and day, especially in low-light situation (for more information, read our new iPad review). If you have the old version, a simple update will download this one.

One of the things missing from the Google Play puzzle thus far is Google's ability to sell digital movies. The search engine giant seems to have everything else set in place to tackle Apple's iTunes and maybe even Amazon itself. But currently Google Play only allows customers to rent their favorite flicks which may be good enough for some, but probably not for the movie buff looking to replace hard copies. Multiple unnamed film-industry sources claim that Google is showing an interest in selling digital films to customers. iRule universal remote control for iOS updated to version 2.3

Remember iRule, the universal remote control app that lets you control all your household devices with just your iOS device. Along with the recently released Android version, iRule has released a new version of the app that includes a bunch of new features for the iOS app as well. Bumping it up to version 2.3, the app introduces new features such as an integrated iTunes module which allows users to play their video and music from within the app instead of having to exit it to launch iTunes; automatic connection to AirPlay devices, and some improvements to the app's UI.

To commemorate the launch of Angry Birds Space yesterday, Rovio and T-Mobile teamed up to create the largest Angry Birds Space art installation in the world: a 300 foot tall slingshot and Angry Bird mounted on the Seattle Space Needle. While they didn't actually launch a bird into space with the contraption, they held events centered around the iconic landmark. Folks were invited to try out the brand new game, take part in giveaways and enjoy Angry Birds Space cupcakes.

Guys never seemed to warm up to the Volkswagen New Beetle, and it doesn't take a dual master's degree in psychology and automotive design to figure out why. The outgoing Beetle featured sheetmetal that could only be described as cutesy, and many (most?) men tend to shy away from vehicles that might result in the questioning of their manhood. Only 29 percent of New Beetle sales went to men, but Bloomberg reports that a more masculine design has put the 2012 Beetle back on dudes' shopping lists. Since the Beetle went on sale in September, men have accounted for a much more robust 43 percent of overall sales.
