Q2 2013: Samsung distances itself from Apple in the smartphone market share race

Global smartphone sales continue to surge in 2013, reaching a record high of 237.9 million units shipped in the second quarter (April - June). Samsung is the incontestable leader, itself breaking a new record by shipping 72.4 million smartphones in Q2 (30.4% market share), the vast majority of them running Android. It's a slight growth compared to Q1 2013 (when 70.7 million Samsung smartphones were shipped).
Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone shipments have reached 31.2 million units in Q2 (13.1% market share) - considerably less than the 37.4 million units shipped in Q1.
